Faith

Leonard Cohen once wrote in a song “Your faith was strong, but you needed proof”. Let’s say that it pretty much summarize my life in the last month. For this whole month I’ve been willing to write about Faith, but how could I write about something that in the last month has been put in doubt and many times has been forgotten in the hurricane that our lives sometimes tend to be.

According to the Oxford Dictionary Faith can be defined as “strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. “. Well it all comes down to beliefs, but faith is much bigger than that, it goes beyond beliefs it goes into the core of souls. Believe is something we may do with our minds, faith is a feeling that comes from our souls. When there is nothing left, we shall still have faith. More than that faith is what makes us go forward, because it gives us the hope for a better future and specially a meaning for the present.

This relation of the present with the future is what makes it so difficult to be dealt with, because when you have nothing left to hold you still in your life, when everything seem to be lost, is faith that grants you the strength to step forward and create a new future. The faith that everything that you are going true has a meaning, that if now everything seem to be lost, faith tells us that tomorrow you everything will be better and you will finally understand the purpose of everything you have been trough.

Last time I said that I believed in destiny, and I do. The universe, the gods give us opportunities to learn and to grow, in every step our faith is tested and it is just up to us to decide which path we should follow, the easy one or the hardest. Don’t even have to tell that the easiest one is not the best, the hardest defies us and give us the strength need to overcome our fears and our own flaws. Although by taking the hardest path, we are also betting that this is also going to give us a better future, even if we are not sure and that is where faith comes in, to give us the strength that sometimes is lacking, to give the hope of a better world and build a structure that is going to resist the most dreadful storm.

You know, it is very difficult to have faith beyond doubt, at least for me. I am always looking out and asking the gods for a direct and truthful answer, it is not difficult to say that it never comes, the so expected owl with a letter containing your future never arrives, the good ladies don’t suddenly appear in front of us to unfold what is saved for us. Well at least not in the way we expect it to, there is always an answer for us if, and only if we are open to see it in “mysterious” ways, in small gestures that reassure you that your going in the right direction and that comes only because of faith.

In times like this is that faith proves to be the most important and irreplaceable weapon, is in this moments that we have to open our hearts and give careful attention to every single and simple sign, which will lead us in direction of what is waiting for us. Faith is the sole and unique thing that gives us the certainty that after so many rainy days the sun will shine once again.
